Kofiansa – present and future

Konfiansa is a newly started project, and there is currently a big difference between today's organizational structure and how we envision tomorrow's.

Where will we be in three years?

Konfiansa wants to establish direct relationships with farmers, cooperatives and villages, and through fair trade improve the living conditions of the producers. In 2024, we have started a collaboration with 14 farmers in Maubisse.

Higher and more stable income

Today, a conventional coffee farmer in East Timor receives around NOK 15 per kilo of coffee. The farmers who produce coffee through our temporary importer, Raw Material, receive around NOK 30 per kilo of coffee. We have a goal to increase this a lot, and depending on the quality of the coffee could pay the farmer up to NOK 100 per kilo.

In addition, we want to create a fund that can help farmers in periods when production is low and incomes are lower than normal.

Social projects

Investments in local public goods are often essential for individuals' living conditions. In close cooperation with villages and cooperatives, we want to develop long-term social projects.

Through our work in the student organization Kria dalan, we have extensive experience with various types of projects. These projects will be knowledge-based, measurable and built on the core of our identity – knowledge exchange and cooperation between Norway and East Timor.

Development of young Timorese

We want to make it possible for young Timorese to take part in the creation of value in their own country. This is important to ensure that acquired knowledge and skills benefit the local community.

Through the work with Konfiansa, from the Norwegian side we shall therefore only facilitate the coffee being sold in Norway. The rest will be done from East Timor by young Timorese with whom we have collaborated for many years.

Konfiansa today

In a start-up phase, we collaborate with the non-profit organization Raw Material. They produce specialty coffee in Atsabe, Ermera.

Before we establish a permanent partnership with a number of farmers, we must be sure that there is a demand for the product we sell. Therefore, in a start-up phase, we will sell coffee produced in Atsabe by Raw Material. This is high-quality coffee, but also coffee where the farmers earn more than both Fairtrade farmers and conventional farmers.

Ameta (th) comes from Atsabe in Ermera, and has built a processing plant where local coffee berries are processed into coffee beans. In the start-up phase, we will sell coffee produced by him and farmers associated with the village.

In 2024, we have started a collaboration with CCALMA – a cooperative we have started in collaboration with 14 farmers in Maubisse, Ainaru. Read more about the collaboration in this blog post.
